Seven of Our Favourite Ocean Pools

    Newcastle Bogey Hole

Seven of Our Favourite Ocean Pools

Australia is home to over 100 ocean pools, offering a safe and stunning place to swim between the ocean and the coast. Australia’s first human-made ocean pool was built way back in 1819 after the commandant of Newcastle decided he wanted his own private swimming pool. So, he ordered a group of prisoners to start digging. And, after months of hard labour, the Bogey Hole was created! (Pictured above: next to the Bogey hole.) Now there are heaps of ocean pools all along the New South Wales coastline. Here are seven of our favourite.

Blue Pool, Bermagui, NSW

Bermagui’s famous Blue Pool is a must swim location on the Sapphire Coast, just three hours from Canberra. It’s a gorgeous, natural pool full of clean, clear ocean water, making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling. It’s hard to spot from above, but make your way down the steps just off Pacific Drive and you’ll soon spy it at the bottom of a dramatic rocky cliff face. There’s no better way to start the day in summer.

Bondi Icebergs, Bondi, NSW

We’d be hard pushed to find a pool that competes with the views, atmosphere and history of Icebergs. The pool has been around for over 100 years and become a Sydney institution. And with a sauna, gym, masseuse, yoga lessons and licensed café, it’s more than just a great place to take in the spectacular views of Bondi Beach. You can lap up the atmosphere from 6am every day, except for Thursdays when the pool is closed for cleaning.

Cost: $6.50, including sauna

Fairy Bower Rock Pool, Manly, NSW

Nestled along the boardwalk between Manly Beach and Shelly Beach, the small but beautiful Fairy Bower Rock Pool is set in one of our favourite locations in NSW. The pool is surrounded by calmer water, so there won’t be many crashing waves making it a perfect place for a rest and a splash. Be aware there’s no shade.

Cronulla Rock Pool, Cronulla, NSW

Cronulla’s main ocean pool sits on the rocky platforms between South Cronulla Beach and North Cronulla Beach. The wide, 50m pool was opened in 1932 and was originally used by local lifeguards for training. Nowadays, it’s a popular spot for swimmers. The Council have been busily making upgrades, which should be finished in November 2017. Just in time for summer.

Dee Why Rock Pool, Manly, NSW

Dee Why Rock Pool is another great spot in Manly, designed just for children. It’s perfectly positioned at the southern end of the popular Dee Why Beach, right next to the promenade. Made from a combination of natural sandstone and concrete walls, it’s a well-kept spot with lots of shallow water making it a great place to bring children for a paddle or a splash around.

The Rockpool, Gerringong, NSW

The Rockpool is a hidden gem in Gerringong, a small surf town between Gerroa and Kiama. Built into the Werri Beach rock platform, just below the cliffs, the view from above is stunning. Back in the day, the rock pool was ladies only but apparently it was hard to keep men out. Nowadays you’ll find everyone here enjoying the water.

Pearl Beach Ocean Pool, Central Coast, NSW

Tucked into the southern end of Pearl Beach, the Pearl Beach Rock Pool was built in the 1920s by a private estate developer to help sell land in the area. These days, the pool is no longer private making it a great spot for a quiet swim. There’s very little surf, making it a perfect spot for lap swimming. The cliff face blocks out the early morning sun, so aim for mid-morning if you like swimming in sunshine.
