1 Oaks Beach
Burnett Heads 4670, QLD
Oaks Beach (1498) is the surfing beach for Burnett Heads. It is located 2 km south of South Head. The beach is a 200 m long, north-east facing pocket of sand wedged in between basalt rocks and boulders to the north, and a groyne that was built by moving basalt boulders off the beach to both trap beach sand and help clear the beach (Fig. 4.89). The beach is backed by a low, narrow dune, with seawalls at each end and a road right behind the dune. There is a small park at the southern end, with parking restricted to the road. The beach receives waves averaging between 0.5 and 1 m which have built a narrow high tide beach fronted by a 50 to 100 m wide low tide bar. When waves exceed 0.5 m, rip currents form against the rocks at each end.
These beaches are relatively safe on the bars and clear of the rocks, however if there is any surf care must be taken owing to the rocks and rip currents, usually against the northern boundary rocks.
