Manly Beach (NSW 317c) is the most popular being located at the end of the Corso and closest to the ferry terminal. The surf club is located at the very southern end of the beach (Fig. 4.218c), with the walkway continuing around the base of the cliffs to Fairy Bower.
Rips dominate the entire beach so it is essential swimmers stay between the flags and avoid the rips, particularly at the northern end. A rock pool is located on the northern rock platform. Waves tend to be a little lower toward Manly, however rips and the efficient Escalator still persists even during lower waves. The rips and high level of beach usage, particularly by tourists, resulting in an average of 218 rescues each year.
