The main Hungry Head beach (NSW 118) continues south of the head for 2 km to some low rocks and a small creek mouth. This is the town beach for Urunga (population 3000) located 2.5 km to the north. The Urunga SLSC was established toward the northern end of the beach in 1925. The beach has maintained its natural setting with the only development being a park and picnic area on the headland and the surf club tucked in between the head and the usually closed mouth of Dalhousie Creek (Fig. 61). South of the creek mouth the beach is backed by dunes, the North Coast railway and the deflected Dalhousie Creek. Wave average 1.5 m and result in a single attached bar with rips occurring every 200-300 m including in front of the surf club.
Three moderately exposed beach usually dominated by beach rips, with several rocks and reefs also present off the boundaries. The best location at the patrolled Hungry Head beach.
