Five Reasons to Get Into Swimming for Fitness

Whether you’re looking to change up your current exercise routine, recover from an injury with low-impact exercise or challenge yourself to try something new, incorporating a few sessions of swimming as part of your weekly exercise is the perfect way to reach your health and fitness goals.

1 – It burns calories and improves heart health

Swimming improves heart health and lung capacity, and helps turn fat into muscle. Like other aerobic activities such as running, swimming can help improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure, conducive to overall health.

Depending on stroke and speed, swimming may burn more calories than other physical activities such as walking and biking. On average, swimming at a medium to fast pace can burn up to 600 calories an hour. Because it uses all main muscle groups, swimming is a fantastic way to get an all-body workout.

2 – It’s a sport you never have to quit

Some sports such as running and tennis can be very demanding on the joints, meaning sooner or later you’re likely to question continuing if you struggle with regular injuries, joint weakness or arthritis. Because swimming is low-impact, it is a suitable form of exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels and doesn’t add strain to your joints and connective tissue like other forms of aerobic exercise.

3 – It improves mental health and mood

During physical activity, we release ‘feel good’ hormones called endorphins. Endorphins can not only make us feel good physically, they also help us feel good about ourselves, improving self-esteem and overall mental health. Swimming is a fantastic way to turn a bad mood upside down.

4 – You can do it anywhere

With over 600 Olympic sized swimming pools in Australia and many more 25-metre pools, swimming is a sport you can take up anywhere, even on holidays! Even if there’s no pool available, chances are you’ll have a beach nearby where you can try your hand at ocean swimming if the area is safe to do so.

Tip: have a separate bag stored in your cupboard that contains your togs, swimming towel, goggles and change of clothes so that you can grab and go anytime.

The best part about swimming? It’s so much fun! There’s a reason why tour companies use photos of people jumping into the water on their ads – there’s just nothing else quite like it.
