1 Kennett River Beach
Kennett River 3243, VIC

Kennett River winds out through a 200 m wide, flat valley to enter the sea across Kennett River Beach. The beach is 200 m long, faces east and is moderately protected by Point Hawdon, which protrudes 500 m to the south-east. The beach is hemmed in by steep, vegetated valley sides, sandstone rock platforms and extensive intertidal and submerged reefs. The Great Ocean Road backs the beach, with a large caravan park across the road. The Kennett River Surf Life Saving Club and car park are wedged in between the road and the beach. The surf club averages 5 rescues each year. Waves average 1.3 m and interact with the sand, rocks, reefs and river mouth to form a narrow surf zone dominated by strong, permanent rips against the rocks and reefs.

Moderately safe when patrolled under low summer conditions, however a very hazardous beach when any swell is running, as strong rips flow out of the bay.
