Horizontal Falls - Talbot Bay

Horizontal Falls - Talbot Bay

- 28 Jan

Talbot Bay
Talbot Bay 6302, WA

The only place in the world where water falls sideways, the Horizontal Falls of the Buccaneer Archipelago is an amazing display of nature.  This unique experience demonstrates the awesome power of the massive tidal movements of the waters in Talbot Bay.

As the fast-moving tidal current squeezes through two narrow, closely aligned gorges of the McLarty Range the water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, building up faster than it can flow through the gap, appearing like a waterfall turned on its side.

The direction of the flow reverses with each change of tide. As tides in the Kimberley can reach 10 metres, a peak tide gives rise to a significant difference in the sea level on either side of each gorge.
