Australia Swims has kicked off this weekend with major events all over Australia. In Victoria swimmers young and old converged on Portsea for the Portsea Swim Classic. Over 1,500 participants competed in the iconic 1,500m swim with over 20,000 eager spectators cheering them from the beach and surrounding boats.

Sam Sheppard won the main race, notching up his fourth title, joining swimming great Rob Woodhouse as the only other 4-time winner of the Men's Open category. He set a blistering pace, finishing the race in a time of 12.05 ahead of Hamish McDougal in 12.16 and Patrick Murphy in third place in a time of 12.27. For the girls Lisandra De Carvello took race line honors in a time of 13.43, narrowly beating Helen Whitford (13.45) and Georgina Stott (14.00).

The Portsea Swim Classic is a community-run event with over 150 staff and volunteers involved. A regular fixture on the summer calendar, it brings everyone together and is supported by locals, holiday-makers and swimmers from afar. Competitor Sophie Patton swam in her first Portsea Classic in 1987 and still competes with her childhood friends. “Every morning in summer we swim at the Weerona Bay followed by a coffee at the beach café. It’s a tradition and it prepares us for the Portsea Swim. This year we all competed in the 2.5km Gold Swim,” Patton said.
