A brief History of Icebergs Bondi

It’s hard to imagine that there was a time where Icebergs Bondi was more than a trending hashtag and the most Instagrammed pool in Australia. But believe it you shall! This popular tourist and local watering hole is more than just a very pretty façade.

Opening in 1929 Icebergs was originally home to the Bondi Beach lifesavers who wanted to keep their swimming fitness up during the winter months so they created the Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club.

In order to be a member of the club, the men had to compete three out of the four Sundays each month for a period of five years. Interestingly, this rule still exists today for what has become such an iconic club.

The members were located in a small shed on the premises until 1960 when they upgraded for the first time. The club was modernised again in 2002 and they moved into the facility we know today.

It wasn’t until 1995 that women were admitted into the Icebergs Another quirk of the club is that upon opening of the official winter season on the first Sunday in May blocks of ice are ceremoniously thrown into the pool!
